Warped Tour (PA#17-21)

I've decided to add "Go to Warped Tour" onto my bucket list. If you don't know what it is, basically it's a crap-load of awesome bands and artists who play on multiple stages outside for a whole day. The lineup this year is SO GOOD. Except for the fact that....it doesn't come to Winnipeg. My goal is to take a road trip to Toronto to attend. Even if it's not this year. I wanna go. It would be amazing to spend the whole day outside, watching some awesome bands play.

Also, here's some amusing pictures.

PAs #5-#16

These are most of the personal additions I had in my WRN.

Final Thoughts.

My favourite assignment in this course was probably The Buried Life project. It was fun, and really got me thinking about what to do with my life and how to live it the fullest. It wasn’t just an assignment; it was more like a life lesson saying there’s more to do than just sit around. My least favourite assignment would have to be Newspaper Blackout Poetry. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t get anything rolling. All my attempts were a failure. I wasn’t too happy with my final product, either; they didn’t make sense to me and I couldn’t understand why everyone else’s were so good. The Friday reading was alright, but I was having troubles keeping up with the responses on Monday. I kept up at first, and then it became difficult as it went on. Along with the reading response, the writing reflections were hard to keep up with if I fell behind, although the content and ideas to write about were much easier. I personally liked using the WRN for personal additions better than putting them on my blog. I guess I just like putting things on paper rather than typing. Integrating technology into the course was a pretty cool idea though, considering the traditional form of writing is on paper. I like how we were taught different way to make sure our digital footprint stayed clean, and safe ways to put ourselves into the world via the internet. Twitter was also a good way to connect with our classmates and make responses to TBL projects that we had made. I find it made some people open up more to commenting and replying. During this course, I learned that I have a hard time getting started on the majority of projects idea-wise, but once I get the ball rolling it doesn’t stop until the project is done. I have some interesting and unique ideas and views on things, so when I can incorporate them into an assignment or a project it can end up being pretty different. I’d like to say I loved the course Ms. McLauchlan. It was really interesting, and it wasn’t at all what I expected. One thing I would add is perhaps a longer writing assignment in the future, perhaps an extended short story or something of the like. My advice to future students would be, if you have any really cool or unique ideas, use them. This is a course where you can really be creative and yourself, so use it to your advantage and enhance your creative (writing) side.

Writing Reflection #9

The Twitter thing is going alright. I've never used it before so I didn't know how it would work out. It's pretty easy to use so it's fine. I don't really get the point of it though. I’ve only been tweeting for what we have to do in Creative Writing, so it’s only an education-related thing for me. It’s a cool way to bring technology into the classroom, in my opinion.

The bucket list is going good. When I started, I had writer’s block for about 20 seconds, then I just wrote away. For successes, or should I say non-successes, I could have crossed off one of them last Friday; I was at a concert and some guys asked if I wanted to crowd surf and out of instinct I shook my head. I’m really upset I didn’t do it and I don’t know why I didn’t either! Other than that non-success, my goal is to cross that one off by the end of the summer. A lot of my other ones will have to wait, although I’m hoping I’ll be able to cross them off one day.

Bucket List Chances. (PA#1.5 [actually #22])

One item on my bucket list is to go crowd surfing. I totally had the opportunity at the Escape the Fate concert last night. Some guys were throwing several people up to go, and they gestured to me if I wanted to go. Out of instinct I shook my head and now I'm KICKING MYSELF because I'm so mad I didn't do it >:O I would have been able to cross something off already...

Newspaper Blackout Poetry.

All the articles I found were about disasters, so it made me decide to do my trio about WWIII / the end of the world. Happy, I know.

Concert goings. (PA#1)

About two weeks ago, I went to to the Enter Shikari concert. And I have to say, it was amazing. I did get elbowed in the jaw, and I tripped and almost lost my phone, but it was so worth it. The opening bands were good too, but Enter Shikari stole the show by far. Nothing is better than releasing months of built up stress and worries by jumping into a mosh pit and just going crazy. The mosh pits were bigger than they were at August Burns Red, which was extremely surprising to me, even though there were less than maybe around 250 people there. I freaking love going to concerts, they just give me that feeling of complete content and they have such a lasting impact with me. The next one I plan on going to is Escape the Fate in the middle of May, so I'm quite excited :D

Writing Reflection #8

This week we tried Blackout Newspaper Poetry, and I have to say, it is HARD. I tried and tried, and after several attempts, I just got frustrated. I looked around the class, and everyone else had something going on for them, and I couldn't understand why I couldn't get something started. I guess I just don't work well with a limited selection of words. I like having an unlimited variety. I couldn't even get one started, nonetheless finish three whole ones! On the same theme too!! I don't know how I'm supposed to get three done by the end of this week. As for successes with Blackout Poetry.....I had none. It's really cool to see the finished ones though, especially after discovering how difficult it is. It`s unique because you have a limited amount of words to choose from, and they are specific ones at that. It is really different, but I have to say that so far I`m not a fan of creating them. I learned that I hate when people tell me my limits with certain things, such as writing, and words in general. Writing should be about expressing yourself limitlessly through words. I just don`t think that using other people`s words does that.

The first comment related to arguments, and how people dont use real logic to win them anymore. They think just because they corrected your spelling or can yell louder that they automatically win the argument, because they don't actually have any real points to make to win. It irritates me because I know a few people who just yell whenever they don't have anything smart to say.... The second comment was about how dogs cheer you up, and I agree because their loyalty to their owners make them happy. Their whole purpose is being your best friend, and I'd say they do a dang good job. Cats just lie around all day being lazy. The third comment was related to traveling and the places she had been before. I never get to travel so it's interesting to see where everyone gets the privelege to go.

The first comment was about how society these days is all about looks. This struck me because not a lot of people realize these days that it is true. Why should it even matter about your appearance? Blush and expensive clothes aren't going to bag you a good career when you're older. The second comment was referring to people with anxiety issues. It seems to relate back to the 'ugly society' thing, because people have to struggle with things like anxiety because of what society tells us. The third comment was just mind-boggling to me. Just..... look at it. JE NE COMPRENDS PAS!!!!

Reading Response #6 16/04/2012

Neverwhere
Neil Gaiman
Pages 212-242 read

"He's a fraud and a cheat and possibly even something of a monster. If you're ever in trouble, go to him. He will protect you, girl. He has to." As to why Door's dad would trust her to a dangerous person beats me. However in the London Below, I guess everyone is found to be dangerous. No one is able to trust anyone else, otherwise they end up dead. Door's dad might have made a deal with the Marquis de Carabas, or have known each other for quite some time, or something of the sort in which he could trust him, but from what I've read of the Marquis de Carabas and how he treats other people would not make me want to trust someone like him. Her dad must have known what he was talking about, and since he is dead, Door has no other advice to follow except for that. Anyways, continuing on, I was surprised to find a Macbeth reference in this book. Richard says "Well, lead on, Macduff," referring to when Macduff leads the troops to bring the fall of Macbeth. Perhaps Richard didn't believe he would make it out of the ordeal alive, just like there was no chance of Macbeth making out of his castle alive, which is why he would say that, or maybe some other reason that I'm not sure of.
A few pages later, a phone call between the angel Islington and Mr Croup take place, and the reader finds out that they are working together. I could not believe this when I read it, because my mind wouldn't let me understand how someone who's supposed to be holy can be working with people so evil who are trying to kill Door. I still have to read on about what will happen with that, but for now Gaiman has really surprised me with adding that twist.

Reading Response 09/04/2012

Neverwhere
Neil Gaiman
Pages 180-212 read
"Richard looked into its eyes. They were a luminescent gray, eyes as old as the universe, eyes that had seen galaxies congeal from stardust ten million, million years ago; Richard shook his head. Islington smiled at him, kindly." I can picture these eyes being full of wisdom and wonder, like an angel's eyes would seem like, although it would be hard to know exactly what eyes like that would seem like. After they talked to the angel, they traveled underground, and Door describes the fog as 'thick yellow river fogs, mixed with coal-smoke and whatever rubbish was going into the air for the last five centuries', which really makes the scene feel as grimy as it should, and emphasize how unfortunate it is that they have to be in that current situation. ``Why do you have fogs down here, when we don`t have them up there anymoreÉ` Door scratched her nose. `There are little pockets of old time in London, where things and places stay the same, like bubbles in amber. There`s a lot of time in London, and it has to go somewhere - it doesn`t all get used up at once.`` This quote kind of screwed up my thoughts, I don`t completely understand what she means. It`s impossible to imagine pockets of time just sitting there.. I`m not 100% sure what Gaiman meant by this, he seems to have many interesting quotes that make you think.

Writing Reflection #5 09/04/2012

I wasn't too far in typing out my moment so I didn't finish a lot of the colour coding, I'll get around to it. I'm still trying to figure out how to make my idea more 'story-like'. As for social media use, I think it would be cool to use Twitter. I've never actually used Twitter before, so it would be interesting to find out how that would work in the class. Fan fiction would be a great idea to do for our next project; I think that would be very fun to do because everyone has a favourite story or character to write about.

Reading Response #4 04/04/2012

It's a little late, but here it is. I'm about halfway done Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. One sentence I found different was "The only noise to be heard was the gentle, gasping almost-groan of wonderment that people make when they watch fireworks: the sound of awe. Then a grubby young man and a dirty-faced girl in a huge leather jacket walked into the light show and vanished." I thought it was unusual that he described Richard and Door as if they were new characters or unimportant people that were just being seen and described, instead of just naming them off like one usually would. It gives it the feeling as if it were the start of something new; that something important was about to happen. Contrasting to the quotes that generally help me visualize something and understand better in my mind, there was one that I could not picture for the life of me. "The figure seemed to be moving slowly, but it must have been walking very fast, as it was only seconds before it was standing beside them. It had golden hair and a pale face. It was not much taller than Richard, but it made him feel like a little child. It was not a man; it was not a woman. It was very beautiful. Its voice was quiet." I couldn't seem to picture quite what he meant. There were so many opposing words in the description for this figure that it just stops the mind from visualing it. The figure it was describing was an angel, who gave Richard and Door some sort of liquid while saying: "When one tastes it, I like to imagine that one is actually tasting the sunlight of bygone days. A toast: to former glories."Along with this figure, I couldn't figure out if what he was saying was supposed to be happy or mourning from better days. Along the chapter, it still doesn't clear up what the angel is feeling or what its views on the worlds' current situation were, which I'm hoping will clear up later in the book.

Writing Reflection #4 19/03/2012

Last week we wrote about moments in our lives that changed us, even in the littlest ways. I had trouble trying to think of something to write about at first, but once we got the idea sheets, I started to get a few ideas, and then I just started writing away. I think it could use a little work in making it more 'story-like', but I think it's a good length. As for my blog, I started out keeping it up to date, but lately I've been having troubles, because I usually finish up what I'm doing on the Blogger app on my phone, and it's been acting up - as in not letting me sign in sometimes and glitching. I've been trying to keep it up to date, and I think I have everything I need on here so far, but I was having issues last week with the app.

Reading Response #3 15/03/2012

Sorry it's a little late, but my phone's Blogger app was not cooperating. While continuing reading Neverwhere, I found a paragraph that contradicts the darkness while they were on the bridge. "They went through the door. Richard shut his eyes, involuntarily, at the sudden flood of light: it stabbed into his head like a migraine." I find this contrast interesting because all throughout the book, Richard has been scared of, and trying to avoid the darkness, and now it's mentioning that he doesn't want to look at the light.
"Mr. Vandemar, on the other hand, simply walked. It was too consistent, too steady and inexorable a walk to be described as a stroll: Death walked like Mr. Vandemar." This quote also also made me think; by personifying Death, and comparing it to Mr. Vandemar really makes him sound like he should be feared. Also, by comparing Death to Vandemar, and not the other way around makes it seem Vandemar is scarier than death itself. Moving on: "He made a noise then- the cuck-koo that a cuckoo might make, if it were five and a half feet high and had a weakness for human flesh--while Mr. Vandemar, truer to his nature, threw back his bullet head and howled like a wolf, ghostly and feral and mad." Gaiman does a good job of making Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar seem like beastly creatures that should be feared by Door and Richard, by comparing them to wolves, or a five and a half foot tall flesh eating cuckoo....

Kony 2012

I don't know everything about the Kony 2012 campaign, but I know that he must be stopped. I'm excited to take part in Cover the Night, where we all run around the whole night covering the city to make his name known. What bothers me though is that this has been going on for a really long time and things are only being done now... and the fact that people don't realize that if we worked together like this for a lot of the world's issues they could be resolved... I'm hoping people realize after this is done that we can work together to solve other global issues.

SixWordMemoir4

These are words from one of my favourite songs, Meddler by August Burns Red. "You won't ever fly fast enough to make time stand still." This line of the song struck me and I'm not sure why. It seems to use demotivation to get it's point across, even though there's more meaning behind it than that. We can't get too caught up in ourselves, we need to think of others, and it bothers me that people nowadays don't ever want to put others before themselves. No I'm not perfect and can sometimes be a little selfish, but I was raised to try to put others first. It's a big part of how my mind works so I wanted to do a Six Word Memoir about it, and it's a bonus that one of my favourite songs relates to this.

SixWordMemoir3

Music is one of the biggest things in my life. I can't last more than an hour without listening to my iPod. Most people make fun of the music I listen to because it's different from what most people listen to nowadays, but I don't care. It's my biggest inspirational influence. When I like the lyrics of a song enough, or find inspiration within them, I have to write them down somewhere. A lot of the personal additions I add to my WRN for Creative Writing are song lyrics for this exact reason. It's a huge part of my life therefore I had to include a music-related Six Word Memoir to my blog

SixWordMemoir2

I had some issues a few years ago with insecurities and social anxiety. I didn`t like myself and I didn`t think anyone else liked me either. I always thought that people were thinking bad things about me or hated me even if they were my friends. I was so insecure with myself I couldn`t handle it. Then I just recently realized that I actually liked who I was, and everyone`s hatred and negativity was all just in my mind. I chose this picture to illustrate this Six Word Memoir because it shows how my head was always down and I didn`t want to look at anyone. It was a significant part of my life, even if it wasn`t positive.
Look up and be happy

SixWordMemoir1

My friends call me a nerd and tell me to stop talking about games all the time. They always talk about what they like, which is stuff I don't really care about, so why can't I talk about stuff I like once in awhile? It's what I do. It's no different from other girls who shop or talk about some tv series I don't watch. It really bothers me when my friends say that a game I like is stupid or pointless, because I feel the exact same way about what they talk about, except I don't voice it because I know they like it. "It's not real, what's the point of it?" Yeah well I like it. I'm not going to stop playing them just because people say it's stupid. I've been playing them my whole life and it's what I like to do. I don't like when people judge other people for other peoples' hobbies.

Writing Reflection 27/02/2012

Last week in our creative writing class we were working on making six word memoirs. I found it difficult to find 6 words that flowed together well that described me and how my life is going at the moment, because it seemed like so much is going on that six words just doesn't cut it. This genre of writing really causes your brain to think outside of the box. It was really rewarding to come up with certain six word memoirs that worked really well because of how challenging and different it is. Another challenging part was trying to find a picture that went well with the memoir, because it was hard enough to think of six words that worked well and sounded good together, and to try to find the perfect picture to illustrate it was just another obstacle in itself.

Reading Response 27/02/2012

Response time! Continuing with Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, I found a quote I found quite unusual: "Nice, in a bodyguard, is about as useful as the ability to regurgitate whole lobsters. He looks dangerous." Now, I'm not too sure why Gaiman decided to use this as a comparison, because there's so many other things he could have used. This particular one caught my eye because of how strange and random it is, however it also really enhances what the speaker is saying, because what usefulness is the ability to regurgitate whole lobsters, in all seriousness. As I continued reading, I realized Gaiman uses a lot of comparisons, because I found yet another one: "Richard could see Hunter and the marquis waiting for them at the tunnel's mouth. The marquis looked as if he had been forced to swallow a pulped lemon." In this book, the marquis is a person who isn't particularly cheerful and doesn't like Richard very much, therefore he is quite sour towards him. Describing that he looks like he ate a lemon enhances that fact. A few pages down, the characters are still walking down the tunnel and Richard makes a diary entry in his head about how much he wants to go home, and how he's "walking around a couple hundred feet under the streets of London with the projected life expectancy of a suicidal fruitfly." I like how he makes the diary entry mentally. It kind of makes him seem like he's going insane, which is what I think Gaiman could have been trying to portray. This book is continually interesting and I admire Gaiman's work a lot. It always seems to have quotes that make you think.

Reading Response 22/02/2012

For the past two weeks, I have been reading Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. One interesting, simile, if you can call it that, was "Then he pondered Mr. Croup's last statement with the intensity of an anatomist dissecting his one true love." I found this quote very chilling and original, and it really made me feel the way the character should be feeling. I love this quote and it very well might be my favorite quote in the book. Another one I found was "A huge stone bridge spanning out over a vast black chasm, into the night. But there was no sky above it, no water below. It rose into darkness." The bridge in the book is supposed to be terrifying, and this quote helps get emotions rolling so you can understand how creepy this bridge really is, like the darkness is infinity and you cant see past it, like the darkness is so thick you can breathe it in, which brings me to the final quote for this response: "...and Richard began to understand darkness: darkness as something solid and real, so much more than a simple absence of light. He felt it touch his skin, questing, moving, exploring: gliding through his mind." This description freaks me out in a way, and makes me desperately want to know what's going to happen on this bridge of darkness. These type of quotes render the book so much more suspenseful and a lot more interesting to read, and is a really good book so far.

Writing Reflection, 21/02/2012

Hello again,

For the past few weeks in our Creative Writing class we have been adding personal additions to our writer's notebook, making listography doodles and writing in our blog.

One personal addition i added was a tattoo idea that i have. It says 'faasnu', written in daedric, which is dragon for 'fearless'. That word has a lot of meaning to me and has to do with struggles I had to learn to overcome a few years ago. The rest of what I have been adding are mostly song lyrics, by August Burns Red and Bring Me the Horizon. "You claim you were built to fall. You were never strong enough," are some of the lyrics in a song called Chasing the Dragon by ABR, which is about addiction and overcoming those addictions while accepting help. Learning to accept help because you aren't strong enough to do something on your own is also something I find important and inspirational. I've added a few successful sentences that react to my personal additions and explain why those additions are there. I think I could try to add a few different things though, to veer away from the music and game additions. The majority will probably, in the end, relate to those two things because they are what take up most of my time, however I will try to add a few unique things to it.

Listography

This was the list I made: "list your favourite games to play". It didn't specify what type of games, so I decided to go and make a list of the thing that takes up 75% of my spare time. I chose to doodle this list because I find lots of inspiration within games because I play them so much, and with certain storylines I find uniqueness and interesting pieces that I find inspiring. It is one of my most time-consuming pasttimes therefore it would be one of the best places for me to find inspiration.

I like these games because I think they have an interesting storyline and they are unique compared to other games I've played. I would say Kingdom Hearts is my favourite game series of all time, because there is so much to it, so much storyline. It's just so interesting and deep because there's always more to know about it. I've played it for years and still these days I'm still discovering/realizing new things about it. It's definitely the most inspiring game I've ever played, with the most emotional storyline.

Gears of War
Kingdom Hearts
Oblivion
Skyrim
Zelda
Dead Space
Pokémon
Bioshock

And to enhance my nerdiness I just wrote "list your favourite games to play" in daedric on the right side.

Digital Footprint doodle

This is my doodle that I made about my digital footprint. I would say my footprint is fairly clean; when I Googled my name nothing relevant or personal to me came up, although my digital footprint is dirtied, in a way, by other people with the same name as me, which seems to be quite a few people with a wide range of hobbies and careers, interestingly enough.

Just Startin

Heeeey people of the bloggin' world, how's it rolling? Just starting out on this thaaang. I'm Sam T, and I'm not sure what else to say, so let's end it at that for now.

Later, mates :)
